Ghana Navy Intercepts Canoe with 59 Sacks of Marijuana at Ada Estuary

The Ghana Navy has intercepted a canoe carrying 59 sacks of marijuana during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation at the Ada estuary.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the operation was carried out by the Riverine Command of the Ghana Navy at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after the team detected a canoe attempting to cross the estuary into the open sea.

The occupants of the canoe abandoned the vessel and fled by swimming away after spotting the naval team.

A search of the canoe uncovered 59 sacks of suspected marijuana, 24 containers of 25-litre fuel, two 40-horsepower outboard motors, a Tecno mobile phone, and a Voter’s ID card.

The Ghana Navy subsequently handed over the seized items to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for further investigation.

The Armed Forces said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects who escaped during the operation.

The Ghana Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting Ghana’s maritime domain and preventing criminal networks from using the country’s inland waterways and coastal areas for illicit activities.
