Former Supreme Court Justice, Justice William Atuguba has lamented how party politics has deeply divided Parliamentarians, which is negatively affecting Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking during the 20th Anniversary Celebration Memorial Lecture of Justice F.D. Annan, First Speaker of Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Justice Atuguba explained that party politics has become more important to some MPs than serving the ordinary citizens of the country.

He admitted that while some Parliamentarians are performing well and not following the path of those who prioritise their political parties over national interest, others have allowed partisan considerations to overshadow their duty to the nation.

Justice Atuguba mentioned the late Omane Boamah and Muntala Mohammed, who died in a plane crash, as fine gentlemen who served diligently and always put the nation first.

He slammed politicians who ignore their electorates after elections.

“Politicians can go all the way to pound fufu, wash people’s clothes but after elections such people become enemies by not answering their phone calls. Why is it so?” he said.
