Residents of Kaniago, a farming community in the Techiman Municipality, have appealed to the Municipal Chief Executive, Kwaku Adjei Mensah, and the Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, to expedite efforts to connect the community to the national electricity grid.
According to residents, the absence of electricity is affecting both economic activities and the education of children in the community, who are unable to study effectively after sunset.
Community members say many schoolchildren rely on kerosene lamps, flashlights, and candles to complete homework and prepare for examinations. They noted that the poor lighting conditions, coupled with smoke from kerosene lamps, often result in eye strain and other health concerns while making it difficult for students to concentrate on their studies.
A concerned parent told reporters that although children in the community are eager to learn, their educational activities effectively come to a halt at night due to the lack of electricity.
Residents lamented that while children in urban areas benefit from proper lighting and access to educational resources, pupils in Kaniago continue to face significant disadvantages.
Community leaders described the situation as urgent, revealing that some families have been compelled to send their children to neighboring communities to stay and study under better conditions.
They fear that without immediate intervention, the educational gap between Kaniago and communities with electricity will continue to widen, affecting the future prospects of the youth.
The residents are therefore calling on the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament to prioritize the extension of electricity to the community, stressing that access to power is essential for education, economic growth, and overall development.
They emphasized that electricity is no longer a luxury but a basic necessity that can help improve learning outcomes and enhance the quality of life for residents of Kaniago.
