Seven people are currently in police custody following violent clashes between the Gomoa and Effutu communities at New Winneba in the Central Region.

The violence, which was linked to a longstanding land dispute, resulted in three deaths and 17 injuries. The injured are receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Winneba Municipal Hospital.

According to the Central Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks entered New Winneba at about 10:40 a.m.

Police said the group was believed to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze and allegedly attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties.

The Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to restore order and prevent the violence from spreading.

Following the incident, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno ordered additional reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles.

Although calm has been restored, security personnel remain deployed in the affected communities to prevent further disturbances.

The police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
