A wave of grief has swept through Ghana’s legal community following the sudden death of a young lawyer who reportedly collapsed while celebrating the Black Stars’ opening victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sara Araba Tettey, 26, is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after Ghana secured a winning start to its World Cup campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
Ms Tettey, who was recently called to the Ghana Bar, had begun her legal career with O & A Legal Consult and was regarded by colleagues and peers as one of the profession’s rising talents.

According to reports, she had gathered with friends to watch the match at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. Moments after celebrations erupted following Ghana’s victory, she reportedly became unresponsive.
Friends and bystanders quickly transported her to KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel launched an intensive effort to save her life. Doctors and emergency responders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes.
Despite their efforts, she was later pronounced dead.
The tragic incident has stunned family members, friends, former classmates and members of the legal fraternity, many of whom had only recently celebrated her admission to the Bar.
An alumna of KNUST’s Faculty of Law, Ms Tettey was remembered by those who knew her as a brilliant and dedicated young professional whose future in the legal field appeared exceptionally promising.
Tributes have since flooded social media, with friends describing her as compassionate, hardworking and deeply committed to her career and community.
Her death has cast a sombre shadow over what was otherwise a moment of national excitement, as Ghanaians celebrated the Black Stars’ successful start to their World Cup journey.
Her body has been deposited at the mortuary pending an autopsy and funeral arrangements.
Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of death in the coming days.
