Residents Decry Illegal Dumping Along Nkoranza Road, Demand Action Against Waste Collectors

19-Jun-2026  BENNEH BRIGHT  87 views

Residents of Forikrom and Fiaso in the Techiman Municipality have expressed concern over what they describe as the increasing practice of illegal waste dumping along the Nkoranza road by private waste collection operators.

The residents are calling on the Techiman Municipal Assembly and environmental health authorities to intervene and regulate the activities of waste collectors operating within the municipality.

According to community members, the situation has worsened in recent weeks, with some waste collectors allegedly abandoning designated disposal sites and instead dumping refuse on roadsides, drains, and undeveloped lands along the Nkoranza road.

Residents say the growing heaps of garbage pose significant environmental and public health risks, including the possibility of disease outbreaks.

One resident of Forikrom alleged that some waste collectors choose to dispose of refuse a short distance outside the town rather than transporting it to approved landfill sites.

The resident expressed concern over the unpleasant odor emanating from the waste and warned that the situation could contribute to the spread of diseases such as cholera if urgent action is not taken.

A resident of Fiaso also criticized the practice, noting that households pay waste collectors to maintain sanitation standards, only for the refuse to be dumped indiscriminately within nearby communities.

The residents are therefore urging the Municipal Assembly to intensify monitoring and enforcement measures against illegal dumping. They are also calling for sanctions, including the revocation of operating permits for any waste collection company found engaging in unauthorized waste disposal.

They believe swift intervention by the authorities will help protect public health, preserve the environment, and restore sanitation standards in the affected communities.
